These striking birds are frequent visitors to backyard feeders and are well-known for their distinctive appearance and melodic songs. While there are numerous cardinal species, the most recognizable is the northern cardinal. The male of this species displays a vibrant red body with a pointed crest atop its head. Conversely, females have predominantly brown bodies with flashes of bright red on their crest, wings, and tail feathers. Given that these birds typically do not migrate, it is common to spot a vivid red northern cardinal against a snowy white backdrop during winter.

During spring and summer, cardinals sing a two-part repetitive whistle or tweet that is unique to their species. Additionally, cardinals use up to 16 different calls for communication purposes. The most prevalent call is a metallic chirp used to deter intruders or predators, as well as to alert their mate while bringing food to the nest. A softer "took" sound may be heard during mate-feeding, a behavior in which the male cardinal feeds seeds to the female.
